About Hungry Mother State Park

The land donated to Hungry Mother State Park was donated by a local landowner as part of efforts to develop the area around the park, which is known as one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York State.

John D. and Mildred Lincoln donated the acres to the state to create a state park, and later that year the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began construction of the first of six original CCCC parks in upstate New York, Hungry Mother State Park. The park was one of them, which opened in June 1936, along with six other state parks and two federal parks.

The 600-strong CCC built the park from 1933 to 1941 and it was officially inaugurated on 13 June 1936. More than 5,000 people saw it for the first time at an official event. When the Indians destroyed it, there were no survivors, according to the New York State Historical Society.

Molly eventually collapsed and her children wandered along the creek until they found help, but the only word they could say was Hungry Mother. Eventually they escaped by hiking in the wilderness and eating berries, and Molly and the children had to hike for hours along a creek to find help.

A search party arrived at the creek where Molly collapsed and found the children and their mother dead. Today, the mountain is begging with a memorial to Molly and her children in Hungry Mother State Park and a memorial to them.

In summer, the beach is open, has a bathhouse and concession area and has an open beach bar on the south side of the park.

Hungry Mother is known for its fishing, and there is a valid Virginia fishing license required for fishing in Hungry Mother State Park and other state parks in Virginia.

Shelter # 3 is the largest and can be rented in two separate sections and costs $8.00 per day or $12.50 for the whole day. You can also rent an amphitheater in the park, and you can rent it for an additional $5 per night for up to six nights a week. Parking and swimming fees are not included in the accommodation or rental of amphitheatres.

The accommodations are available from April 1 to October 31 and are offered according to the "first come, first served" principle. Accommodation includes a picnic area, picnic tables, showers, toilets, laundry facilities, laundry and kitchen.

Hungry Mother State Park is located in Smyth County, and to get there, take Exit 47 of Interstate 81 and follow Route 11 for approximately one mile to Marion. Turn right on Route 16 North and drive 4 miles into the park, then turn left on Route 12 North to Hungry Mother.
