A significant part of the country is mined for coal, but the production of acidic pit water is minimal due to the neutralizing effect of limestone deposits. In 1961, the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the United States Forest Service purchased a 1,000-acre property on the western edge of Fayette County, Arkansas.

Most of the unspoilt area is forested and is located on ridges and valleys, with the exception of a small piece of forest on the west side. The subsequent reforestation and recreation facilities, funded by the USGS and the Arkansas Department of Natural Resources (ARDNR), have transformed the area into a beautiful, healthy forest that offers visitors many outdoor recreational opportunities.

Campers will have to choose a site and provide their own water, and forest officials will issue permits and familiarize visitors with tent regulations. The hiding is equipped with a vaulted latrine, a fireplace, toilets, showers, fireplaces and other amenities.

The Fernwood State Forest Land Lab is located just outside the perimeter of Hidden Hollow Campground. The agricultural laboratory is used to promote the formation of natural resources and environmental education.

A 3 km hiking trail runs around most of Fernwood's largest tract and two lookout points offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. This provides a great opportunity for forest users to enjoy the natural beauty of this forest.

According to the regulations of the Wildlife Department, the forest can be used for fishing and hunting. Parking is available in all forest areas and in one parking space in the Fernwood State Forest car park.

Many ponds are dotted with white perch, blue fish and catfish and are scattered throughout the area.

Southwest of Hidden Hollow Campground there are three shooting ranges and firearms are not allowed to be fired from the street or driveway. Hunting is allowed for all hunters, but hunters are only allowed to hunt on private land or in a private hunting area such as a campground.

The course is open daily during the hours of sunrise and sunset, but participants must get up and down at least 30 minutes before sunrise and at least 10 minutes after sunset. Motor vehicles are not allowed to operate on the designated roads and on private land.
