About Tuscarora State Forest

The Tuscarora State Forest takes its name from the Tuscarsora Mountains, and the mountains are named after a tribe adopted by the Iroquois who were allowed to emigrate to the region in 1714.

The Tuscarora State Forest covers 91,165 hectares and is located in the Tuscarsora Mountains in upstate New York, north of Albany. The original forest consisted of hemlock, brook soils and American oaks on the slopes of the mountain peaks.

In 1902, J. Preston Thomas purchased the District's first state purchase of land for $1.72 per acre.

Originally known as Rothrock Forest Reserve, this section was merged with the Pennypacker and McClure Reserves to form what is now Tuscarora State Forest. The Tus carrsora State Forest, which takes its name from the Tuscarsora Mountains, the highest peak in New York State and one of the highest peaks in North America.

The mountains are named after the Tus carrsora, a tribe adopted by the Iroquois who were allowed to emigrate to the region in 1714.

The original forest consisted of hemlock and brook soils, and American oaks stood on the slopes of the mountain peaks. The Tuscarora State Forest covers 91,165 acres and is located in the eastern part of New York State, about 30 miles northwest of Albany.

Originally called Rothrock Forest Reserve, this section merged with the Pennypacker and McClure Reserves to form what is now Tuscarora State Forest. In 1902, J. Preston Thomas purchased the District's first state-owned land purchase at a price of $1.72 per acre. The harvest began in the early 1900s and the great era of logging ended in 1930.

State Forestry officials are monitoring and planning the CCC's work activities, including the development of the Tuscarora State Forest and its vantage points. Important developments are in the pipeline, such as the construction of a modern recreation centre and a new pathway system in the area.

Six CCC camps are located in Tuscarora, and one of them, founded in the early 1960s, is located at Licking Creek Camp, north of the entrance to the National Park.

There is a playground, picnics and fishing and much of the area is accessible to people with disabilities.

Fowler's Hollow is a cross-country ski resort that includes 11 km of trails along the old railway.

Special hiking maps are available and offer a wide range of views of the forest and its surroundings, as well as a variety of hiking trails.
