About Gifford Pinchot State Park
Gifford Pinchot State Park, one of Canada's largest state parks, is located on the eastern shore of the Great Lakes in the state of New York. The park consists of converted fields and wooded slopes, with Lake Pinchesot, which covers 340 hectares, as the main attraction. There are 339 campsites at the southern end of the lake, and the park hosts the largest number of campers in North America, more than 2,000 per year. RV parks open every second Friday in April and close at the end of October.
Each campsite has a pitch of up to 1,500 square metres and each pitch can accommodate four to six people, with a maximum capacity of four people per pitch. Each pitch must have at least two beds, two showers, a macadam mat, and a toilet and shower.
Pets are not allowed in the overnight zone, but there is a modern area for scouts, churches and other organized groups who want to camp together. Each campsite has 50 pitches that can accommodate up to 250 people, with a maximum capacity of four people per pitch.
Three cottages for up to five people can sleep in single, double or single beds and each has its own bathroom, shower, kitchen and dining area. Near the Seven there are toilets, showers, drinking water and a dishwasher, as well as a picnic area with picnic tables, picnic chairs, a fireplace and a picnic table.
The Mongolian style tent is round with wooden deck and can accommodate up to six people in a single or double bed or twin beds. Near the nearby bath house 7 there are toilets, showers, drinking water and a dishwasher. Yurts can be accommodated in single, double and double beds as well as in double, single and single beds.
In the northeastern part of the park there is an area for horse riding and the area includes a number of interconnected paths through the surrounding fields. The area is surrounded by a stream, a small stream and a large pond with waterfalls and a waterfall.
The Pinchot Lake, which covers 340 hectares, has three starting points available 24 hours a day, and there are 286 berths and canoe pitches available for hire from 1 April to 1 November. The berths include a large area designed for the increasingly popular day sailors and catamarans, while a shelving area offers sailing boards for small sailboats. There is horse rental and Pincham Lake has a number of horse trails, which charge an annual fee of $1,000 per horse and $2,500 per horse per year.
Motorboats must be registered by the state, and non-motorised boats must have one of the following boat registrations from each state. There is the possibility to rent a small boat, such as a kayak, canoe or pontoon boat for a fee of $1,000 per boat and $2,500 per year. There are a number of picnic areas and picnic tables in the area.
The Quaker racing area has a volleyball court, the Conewago area serves as a softball court and the O'Connell area as a tennis hall.
Four barrier-free picnic pavilions can be reserved for $11 per month against advance payment.
On the north side of the park there is a picnic pavilion, open daily from 11 am to 4 pm.
On the south side of the park there is a picnic pavilion, open daily from 11 am to 4 pm, and a pavilion for shared use on the north side.
The surface of the trail is full of gravel, but the terrain is mostly flat with some gentle hills. The paths are designed for a slow, comfortable ride and are suitable for families with most bicycles.
Turn right and take care of other road users, especially if you are driving on the same road as the picnic pavilion or the park parking lot.
Fast and reckless driving is prohibited in the park, as is the use of the parking lot, picnic pavilion and parking lot.
Access to the public is via the Conewago Day Use Area, and campers can use the path directly from the campsite. With sufficient snow cover, many of the hiking trails offer a wide variety of trails, as well as a number of waterfalls and other natural attractions.
The best way to get there is via the Conewago Day Use Area, which is closed to camping and vehicle traffic during the winter season. The other good hiking trails are the Great Lakes Trail and the Gifford Pinchot Trail, both closed in winter. For cyclists, the path is marked for cycling and includes a number of paths, as well as a bicycle parking and a cycle path.
The park offers a variety of environmental education and interpretation programs, and participants receive information about the park's natural resources, as well as guided hikes and other activities.
In spring and late autumn, programs are offered, and pontoon rides around the lake offer a variety of activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing, kayaking and kayaking, as well as a range of other activities. Pontoons crossing the lakes offer a wide range of educational activities and activities for children, adults and families from spring to autumn.
The park's Nature Centre is open in the Conewago Day Use Area in summer, and the exhibits and informative brochures along the way help visitors learn more about the park's natural environment. For more information, contact the Park Office at (705) 888-5555 or (604) 584-6555 for information on the park's activities and programs.
Curricula and environmental education programmes are available for school and youth groups, as well as schools and youth groups. Group programmes can be arranged by phone or at the park office, but must be arranged in advance.
The park is close to the major cities of York and Harrisburg, so take 83 or PA 177 South to York and then drive back to the capital Philadelphia via Pennsylvania State Parkway.
