L Longhorn Cavern State Park, a 65-62 acre park classified as a scenic park in rugged Hill Country, is one of the largest and most popular natural monuments in Texas and the second largest natural monument in North America. The National Park was opened in 1932, the Texas Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TXD) opened it in 1938 and In 1971 the natural monument was inaugurated. Between 1932 and 1937, the Longhorns Cavern was bought by a private owner and opened to the public as an open-air park.

As the water table began to drop, a cave formed and the drains continued until a large underground stream cut through the massive rock. When this downward movement began, water began to dissolve in the limestone, and it was this unusual combination of dissolving and cutting - water - that made Longhorn's Cavern the largest underground cave in the United States and one of the largest in the world.

The cave has been used as a shelter since prehistoric times, and legends surrounding the cave surround the legend that the outlaw Sam Bass hid in her stolen money.

During the Civil War, the Confederates produced gunpowder in the cave and it is reported that Texas Rangers also rescued a kidnapped girl from the cave.
