About Buescher State Park

The Buescher State Park, a scenic area, is located in the west of the state of Bavaria, about 30 km north of Munich. Between 1933 and 1936 Emil and Elisabeth Buscher transferred the 318 hectares of land to the Länder. After Emil Bucher's death, his heirs donated him to the German state park system to protect his landscapes.

The original park opened in 1940 and covered a total of 1,738 acres, which were later transferred to the MD Anderson UT Cancer Center. The city of Smithville bought the rest of the park in the early 1990s as part of its Texas State Park System development plan.

A beautiful wooded area, including a quiet lake, is an excellent area to observe the seasonal distribution of over 250 bird species. Mammals include white-tailed deer, elk, coyotes, big cats, owls, peregrine falcons and many other bird species.

The Spanish mission in East Texas, the King Royal Highway, runs through the park and connects San Antonio and Bexar with the Spanish missions in East Texas. The road network generally follows the route of the former Spanish Mission of San Juan de Guadalupe in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

The scenic park roads lead through extensive pine and oak forests that were once considered so important that they covered large parts of central Texas during the Ice Age, when glaciers dominated the north. The park was part of a colonial subsidy from Austin, and the original improvements to the park were made by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps).

Nearby attractions include Bueser Falls State Park Trail, Texas State Historic Park and Big Bend National Park.

The park is located on the west side of Big Bend National Park and Texas State Historic Park. Continue to Park Road 1 and park at the intersection of Park Drive and State Road 2.
