About Fairy Stone State Park

Fairy Stone State Park is home to the mysterious Fairy Stone and is one of six original Virginia State Parks that opened on June 15, 1936.

The 4,868-acre site, which is the second largest national park in Virginia and the third largest in the United States, was donated by Junius B. Fishburn, president of the Southwest Virginia Trust Company.

In the late 1920s, various groups throughout the Commonwealth began to advocate for the establishment of state parks throughout Virginia, but it was not until 1933 that the state began to build the system. This has allowed us to appreciate so much of our region in such a short time, from the early 19th century to the mid-1930s.

The 4,868-acre site, which is the second largest national park in Virginia and the third largest in the United States, was donated by Roanoke newspaper publisher William J. F. Smith. Six properties were purchased at the time, including Fairy Stone, and in 1933 it was dedicated to the state of Virginia.

The CCC provided manpower and materials for the construction of the park, whose camp was evacuated in the spring of 1941. Some of their handicrafts can still be seen in the log cabins in the parks, and many of them were part of the original CCCC construction.

Each campsite has a ring of fire and can be used for campfires and cooking, but all vehicles must park on the paved area of the campsites. In addition to accommodation units, one additional vehicle is allowed per campsite, and each vehicle must park at least 1000 feet from the campsite.

In addition to campgrounds, Fair Stone State Park also has a number of hiking and biking trails, as well as a variety of wildlife.
