About High Cliff State Park
High Cliff is a state-run recreation area on the western edge of North Carolina's state park system. Many facilities, including a specially designed cabin, are adapted for disabled guests. The park had a lookout tower and many of its many hiking trails, as well as a number of picnic spots.
High Cliff takes its name from the Niagara Plaice, which runs parallel to the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago. High Cliff State Park, along with several other national parks in North Carolina, has been designated a state nature reserve for its natural beauty and scenic beauty. The band extends north to Fall River and south to Falls Lake, the state's largest lake and one of the most popular recreational areas.
The Silurian Sea, which covered large parts of Wisconsin nearly 400 million years ago, formed a series of outcrops often referred to as Niagara Plaice, the largest of its kind in the United States.
The flat Dolomites were tilted by earth forces, exposing their high western edge to the earth's surface. These sculpture heaps are an important archaeological feature and evidence of the presence of human activity in this region during the last Ice Age.
The hill in the picture was built by nomadic Siouan Indians as part of the present-day park and is one of the most important archaeological sites in Wisconsin and the second largest in North America.
Back in the 1880s, the area was known for its breathtaking views of Lake Winnebago, and from 1895 to 1956, one of the largest limestone quarries in North America (and the only one in Wisconsin) was operated here to extract limestone from the rocks. Workers drilled holes in the stone and used dynamite to blast it, but not for long, according to the park's website.
Other limestone quarries crushed gravel, used bricks and mortar and used lime to claw floors to reduce acidity. Horses pulled limestone - and made dump trucks and trucks to an area near the furnace, where they were replaced by horses. The lime extracted from the kiln was sent to the Midwest for processing into gypsum cement. Up to 40 employees worked at the plant, including workers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.
In 1956, the state bought the land and opened the park in 1957, and many had recently immigrated from Hungary. High Cliff State Park has 112 regular family campsites, 32 of which have electricity. Also new in 2005 are barrier-free cabins, which have been specially designed for people with disabilities.
Firewood is available in the car park and there is a coin laundry at Hilbert's in Stockbridge. Most of the daily necessities can be purchased at a local grocery store or at the park's main store, the High Cliff Store.
In low season you can use the self-registration station or you can select and register at the park office to set up your campsite. In high season, you can choose a campsite by setting it up in the parking lot of the High Cliff State Park car park or in the parking lot.
Three outdoor shelters and a closed gazebo can be reserved for an additional fee, and you can use High Cliff for free in the summer and winter months.
