About Fort Clinch State Park

The picnic area is located in a maritime hammock landscape, surrounded by dunes and oaks. There are free standing barbecue and picnic tables, and there is a playground with swings, slides and climbing poles for children.

Fort Clinch was named after the Clinches River in the southern United States, and the federal government began building the fort in 1847. When the Confederates began the war in 1861, the Confederates were occupied when General Robert E. Lee ordered a retreat the following year. The construction of this fortress continued during the civil war, but the garrison operations were greatly reduced in the years before and after. Eventually, the garrison operation was stopped and it was reoccupied by the US army.

The fort was reactivated in 2010 as Fort Clinch State Park, a state park in southern Georgia.

Today Fort Clinch, one of Georgia's oldest and most historic fortifications, is in remarkable condition of preservation.

In 1935, the state of Florida acquired 256 hectares, including the abandoned fort, and it was officially opened to the public in 1938. Civil Defence was responsible for the construction and development of the park. This was the first in a series of programs to acquire adjacent land and develop Fort Clinch State Park, a state park in Florida.

Fort Clinch State Park has two campsites, all of which have rigs of any size and are located at the back of the site. The Atlantic Beach campsite has a campsite with picnic table, picnic area and picnic tables.

Bathrooms and hot showers are centrally located on the campsite and a washing machine is also available.

The Amelia River campsite has 41 campsites along the Amelia River with oak hammocks and a landfill at the entrance to the campsite.
