Fort George Island has been occupied by humans for over 5,000 years, but the smart 1920s decor came to the holidays. Fort George Island was named after George George George, Georgia's first governor, whose fortress was built to defend Georgia's southern flank when Georgia was a colony.

Indians have slept here, colonists have built a fortress and humans have occupied it for over 5000 years.

Today, visitors come for boating, fishing, cycling and hiking, but one of the main attractions is the recently restored Ribault Club. Once an exclusive resort, it is now a popular tourist destination with a variety of restaurants, bars, shops and restaurants.

This 2-hour tour starts at the historic Ribault Club and visits the Kingsley Plantation before driving 3 miles through a 3-mile lake and forest rich in plants and animals. Fort George is home to the longest civilization in Duval County, and the huge clusters of shells found on the island are a striking testimony to an Indian settlement dating back 7,000 years.

An important source of food for the native inhabitants were oysters and fish found in the surrounding waters. After edible portions were eaten, oyster shells were discarded, which over the years accumulated into huge, now obscure shellfish.

Originally called Fort Saint Georges, the fort was built in the late 17th century and built on the site of what is now Fort George Island. The fort is no longer standing and its location has not yet been determined, but it was originally built on a hill, according to the New York State Department of Natural Resources.

Mount Cornelia rises above sea level and is considered one of the highest peaks in the state of New York and the second highest in the United States. Join the self-guided Saturiwa Trail Tour to learn more about the history of Fort George Island and its inhabitants. There is a 1.5-mile trail that starts at Talbot Islands Ranger Station on the west side of Mount Cornelia. Guided tours are available at Talbot Islands Ranger Station, and tours are also available at the Fort Georges State Park Visitor Center.

A cycling tour through history is offered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDC) and Fort George Island Culture Park and the National Park Service.

The track is 4.4 miles long, consists of asphalt roads and hard gravel and is suitable for large, tired bikes. For off-road cyclists, there is a two-mile cycle and hiking trail that crosses the parking lot of Fort Georges State Park on the east side of Mount Cornelia.

Guided tours include interpreting lessons, bottled water and snacks, but no prior knowledge is required. Riders under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and must be in the driver's seat of the van for at least 30 minutes prior to the tour.

A tour of Little Talbot Island is one of the most popular activities in Fort George Island Cultural State Park. Enjoy the true beauty of hammocks along the coast while a Segway cross-country unfolds an amazing island path. A mature lake forest leads to the beach, and the last stop on the tour on the way back to LittleTalbot is a walk through the more mature lakes and forests.

The morning tour is nearly four miles long, taking you around the island, through the lake and forest and visiting the Kingsley plantation. The afternoon tour takes about an hour and skips the Kingsley section, but takes about 2.5 hours and starts at the entrance to Little Talbot Island, just south of the main entrance to the park. This is the most popular tour of Fort George Island Cultural State Park and takes about two and a half hours and is about three miles long.

Fort George Island has more than two kilometers of hiking and biking trails, and the trails lead to the southern end of the island in Fort George Beach State Park.

This gradual process will restore the golf course's land to its natural state, restore the marine forest habitat and make it a natural habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but must always be on a leash and not be left unattended for more than an hour. The paths are suitable for tall, tired bikes and well-behaved people. Dogs and children under 5 years of age are located on the south side of the golf course, next to the parking lot and the hiking trail.
