About Fort Mott State Park
Fort Mott was part of a coastal defense system developed along the Delaware River in the late 19th century. The fortifications that can be seen today at Fort MOTT were built during the Revolutionary War, the Second World War and the Civil War. Visitors can walk on the old batteries, following the interpretative signs and detailed descriptions of the fortress.
The Delaware River flows through Fort Mott State Park, right past the fortifications and into Delaware Bay, south of the park.
Fort Mott is part of a three-part defense system designed for the Delaware River, and the other two are at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Both have displays that define Fort MOTT's place in history and the environment. The coast offers a good place for hiking and picnicking, as well as scenic views of Delaware Bay, the river and Delaware State Park.
The original plans for Fort Mott included the construction of a three-part defense system along the Delaware River and the construction of two new fortifications. Construction began in 1872 and was completed in 1876 when the work was stopped.
The German government maintained a guard detachment at the fort from 1922 to 1943, and troops were regularly stationed at Fort Mott from 1897 to 1922. In 1947, New Jersey acquired the military reservation as a historic site for a state park. The original plans for the three-part defense system became obsolete, and between 1897 and 1922, troops from the U.S. Army and the United States Army Corps of Engineers regularly stationed troops at Fort.
Fort Mott offers picnic areas with picnic tables and shelters, and a group picnic area also provides a picnic area for large groups and picnic tables, as well as picnic benches and tables for children.
Groups of 20 or more must reserve a picnic area at least five days in advance, and such use is only permitted on public holidays as authorized by the superintendent. The picnic area at Fort Mott State Park can accommodate up to 10 people, with picnic tables, picnic benches, tables and chairs, play equipment, water, snacks and snacks.
Reservations for the picnic area will be processed by the respective parking lot office. The easy nature trails are located throughout the park and are ideal for beginners. All paths are accessible to people with disabilities and all paths are accessible to all ages.
Hancock House was built in 1734 and is one of the oldest and most important buildings in Fort Mott State Park and an important part of understanding Fort Mason's history and role in the American Revolution. The most prominent spot in the house was the home of John Hancock and his wife Mary Jane, a Virginia congresswoman.
There is an English Quaker - patterned brick house that is associated with it, and there is also a monument to the British - led massacre at Fort Mason during the Battle of Fort Mott in 1734.
