About Fort DuPont State Park

Take the time to visit the nearby Fort DuPont State Park in the Delaware City area. Named after one of Delaware's most famous and influential industrialists, William Du Pont, the fort was first used as a military base during the Civil War. After World War II, it was given to the state of Wilmington and used for various purposes, including the Governor's Bacon Health Center. In 1992, a state park was inaugurated in this part of the country, and today it houses a number of state parks and leisure facilities.

Fort DuPont is located south of Delaware City on Route 9 and covers an area of about 1,500 acres (about 2.5 square miles).

Open all year round, the park offers passive recreation, including picnics, fishing and hiking. Self-guided hikes are a great way to explore the rich historical past of the place. For those who want to relax actively, tennis and basketball courts, as well as hiking and cycling trails are available.

The Port of Penn Interpretive Center is located in Fort DUPONT State Park, a short walk from the park entrance and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. See what life was like on the Delaware River, and the history of Fort DuPont and the state of Pennsylvania.

The center offers a variety of shows and programs that tell the story of Fort DuPont, the city of Philadelphia and Penn Harbor. This self-guided walk offers views of the scenic marsh landscape that surrounds our city, as well as a walk through the historic city itself.
