About Clermont State Park

The historic site of Clermont State is home to seven generations in a row who have shaped the architecture, interior design and landscape of the place.

These achievements include the creation of the first public school in the United States, the swearing-in of George Washington and the creation of a national park. Robert R. Livingston Jr. is the most notable resident of Clermont, but today it seems that he and his family go back to the early 20th century, when it was the home of the last two generations of this estate.

Hikers and cross-country skiers will enjoy the same paths that the Livingston family developed for horse-drawn carriages. Clermont was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973 and five historic gardens have been restored since the early 20th century. It is also the first public school in the USA and the oldest public park in Ohio.

The many hectares of fields and forests are a paradise for bird lovers: more than 100 species are known to visit the grounds of the estate.

Clermont hosts a host of annual events to highlight the Livingston family's relationship with the surrounding community. The spring sheep wool showcase is based in Clermont, where pioneering work in agriculture and sheep farming took place.

What better place to celebrate Independence Day than Clermont State Park, home to one of the nation's oldest and most popular summer camps?

Summer fun continues until August, when Clermont celebrates its annual Steamboat Day, a family celebration where children can make their own scrimshaw ornaments and watch a theatre performance on a real steamboat. Christmas in Cleront, which opens the winter season with a guided tour of the oldest Christmas tree farm in the country. The property continues to host many Livingston dogs as it is home to many of them, and families will enjoy the opportunity to watch the annual New Year's Eve fireworks in the area.
