About Willamette National Forest
Willamette National Forest is located in Oregon and covers 682,343 acres from the Oregon-Washington border to the Washington-Idaho border in the north - central part of the state. In Oregon, the forest is located at 1,845 feet above sea level and covers an area of 2.5 million square kilometers.
The forest is accessible via four major highways and can be reached on foot or by bicycle from Portland, Eugene, Salem and Portland International Airport. Willamette National Forest is known for its cascades and chains of outstanding rivers, which are forested by the Columbia River, Columbia, Deschutes, Rogue and Columbia rivers, and other rivers.
The forest has more than 60 developed campsites, which comprise about 1,500 campsites, and campers are allowed to camp in the forest. These campsites usually have at least one fireplace, a campfire and a picnic area. Electricity connections are available at most campsites with water - safe toilets with flushing facilities.
While the Forest Service manages the campsite facilities, daily maintenance is done by a private company. Most overnight stays require a fee, and some charge for camping in the morning and evening hours.
Willamette National Forest has more than 3,000 miles of hiking trails and trails within its borders.
While many are in wilderness areas, some are within the boundaries of national parks, national forests or other national forest areas.
This itinerary lists some of the most popular hiking trails and we will expand this list over time. We have included a general map, but you should check this page again before planning your next trip.
Three scenic low-altitude trails have been designated as National Recreation Trail, and in summer visitors can climb the mountains from squatted lookout points. Willamette Falls National Forest, Oregon's largest national park, is located 60 miles east of Salem and 50 miles from Eugene.
This includes Willamette Falls National Forest, the largest national park in the United States, with more than 1.5 million acres of land.
Willamette has eight wilderness areas, most of which are the largest mountain peaks in the Oregon Cascades. Iron Mountain has spectacular wildflowers in spring and the course offers great views.
Although maps on this website give you an idea of the length and difficulty of the wilderness trails, they are not enough to prepare you for a wilderness experience. Every year, several people get lost while hiking in the wilderness, but this year, several people got lost while hiking through the wilderness.
Sometimes you don't expect bad weather or just don't prepare with objects like a good map and a compass. Detailed maps of wilderness areas are available from the Forest Service, and help with directions can also be found through the HREF on the Willamette National Forest Wilderness Area website. Do not rely only on the maps provided on this website for your wilderness tour.
