About Natural Tunnel State Park

The Commonwealth of Virginia acquired the tunnel and 100 surrounding acres in 1969 from Natural Tunnel Chasm Caverns Corp. to create a Natural Tunnel State Park. About 750 acres were later purchased by the Virginia Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNR) and the park opened in 1971.

The natural tunnel, described by William Jennings Bryan as the "eighth wonder of the world," has been attracting visitors to the mountains in southwest Virginia for more than 100 years. Today there is a park that offers visitors a variety of natural attractions, such as caves, caves and caves, as well as hiking, biking, fishing, camping and other outdoor activities.

The formation of the natural tunnel began in the early Ice Age, when carbonated groundwater seeped into a crevasse and dissolved the surrounding limestone and dolomite rock. Stock Creek diverted the tunnel and dug it out slowly over many centuries, and many fossils were found in the creek bed and along the walls of this tunnel. Daniel Boone was probably the first white person to see the tunnels, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

No one wrote about the site until Lt. Col. Stephen H. Long explored it in 1831 and published an article in a geological journal in 1832. During the Civil War, the area around the tunnels to Salpeter was mined, and in 1890 the South Atlantic and Ohio Railroads came along and laid tracks through the tunnel using the natural formation. In 1906, the Southern Railway acquired the tracks and created a passenger line, the Natural Tunnel Line, which runs through these tunnels.

Although it no longer carries passengers, large deposits of coal were discovered in the tunnels, as well as a large amount of coal transported on the route before it was no longer carried by passengers.

The Natural Tunnel State Park has two swimming pools, one for adults and two for children. The swimming pool is open from 10 am to 4 pm. M. on weekends and from 5 p.m. on weekdays. Under no circumstances will swimming be reimbursed, and the complex includes a water park, picnic area, outdoor amphitheater and playground for children.
